Congratulations on the release of Today I Am A Penguin.
Please tell us more about it.
About the book:
A young girl takes her stuffed penguin on a sled ride that
turns into an Antarctic adventure when her imagination transforms them into
Adelie penguins. Packed with
educational information and action adventure, children experience what it is
like to be a penguin.
What was the inspiration for this book?
Melissa: Children have such amazing imaginations! I have watched them over the years pretend
to be all kinds of things and learn as they pretend. I wanted to have a book that teaches children and is packed with
science curriculum but does so in a fun imaginative way where they can enjoy
learning.
What is your favorite moment from the book?
Melissa: Probably when Kaleigh, Ian, and Sammy are “flying
in the water.” I think that would be
the most fun about being a penguin.
Is this your first published book?
Melissa: Yes
Congratulations! First book publication is SO exciting.
We’d love to hear more about you.
I’ve loved to write and draw since I was a little girl. Much of my time growing up was spent drawing
and writing as well as reading. After
high school, I earned an associate degree in child development and a bachelor’s
in illustration. Soon after graduation,
I married and had four children in eight years. Busy with my beautiful family, I worked on writing and
illustrating when I could, taking writing courses, attending SCBWI conventions,
and learning from other writers and illustrators. I currently teach art part time at a private school where I write
and develop the curriculum for my classes.
Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled

Wishing you great success Melissa. Thanks for the interview. My son loves penguins!
I'm another penguin lover. The illustration on the cover is charming; I especially like the glasses on the one fella. Looks like a fun read as well as an educational one.
What a delightful cover. I LOVE it. Sure to be a fun read for kids.
