GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES MARY JEAN KELSO, AUTHOR OF RV MOUSE

Congratulations on the release of the hardcover version of RV Mouse. Please tell us more about it.

This is a story about a little mouse that gets trapped in a motor home and the chaos it
creates.

This enchanting story, charmingly illustrated, recounts the escapades of one furry little adventurer who is clearly out of his element in a motor home. Young readers and their adult counterparts will enjoy reading this fast-moving tale, told so convincingly from the mouse’s point of view.
—Robbin Gould, Editor, Family Motor Coaching magazine

What was the inspiration for this book?

Some of the incidences actually happened when my family was camping in our new motor home years ago. One night mice found an open vent the manufacturer had not screened. I found the girl that had been sleeping on the couch sitting outside on top of the picnic table. She said a mouse had woken her up when its whiskers brushed her cheek. The idea was too good to ignore so I made it into a book.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

When the woman is swinging the broom and bopping her husband instead of the mouse.

Is this your first published book?

No, I believe Guardian Angel Publishing has about ten of my books out now with more under contract. I also write Young Adult and Adult fiction.

We’d love to hear more about you.

I am a journalist and was an Assistant Editor for several magazines. I wrote for many newspapers and magazines, including Family Motor Coaching, Trailblazer and RV’n On. Although I still write articles for newspapers and magazines, my favorite type of writing is fiction.

Besides RV Mouse, The Christmas Angel, and its sequel, One Family’s Christmas, and the Andy & the Albino Horse series, I also wrote the young adult Lynne Garrett series: Goodbye Is Forever, Abducted!, and Sierra Summer. Also Kat’s Cradle, which is a young adult novel. Blue Coat, and The Homesteader series are my adult Historical Western novels.

I recently received awards from The Nevada Press Assn. and The National Press Assn. as a correspondent for The Lahontan Valley News.

I am a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Alamo Defenders Descendents Association (credit goes to my ancestors for that!). I am also a member of Made in Nevada -- http://madeinnevada.org.

Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled for RV Mouse?

It will be at signings that are already scheduled for summer and fall. I have been in contact with the Family Motor Coaching Assn. about the possibility of signing at their
next convention.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming RV Mouse events?

Thank you for stopping in to share RV Mouse with us. Readers, you can pick up your copy of RV Mouse from the GAP Bookstore. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES MARY JEAN KELSO, AUTHOR OF BIRDS IN THE FLOWER BASKET

Welcome to GAP Family Blog, Mary Jean. Congratulations on the release of BIRDS IN THE FLOWER BASKET. Please tell us more about it.

About the book:

A little girl learns about birds through the front window of her home.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Each year birds build nests in my flower baskets that hang on the front porch. It was very frustrating trying to keep both the flowers and the birds alive. If I watered the flowers, the nest (including the eggs or babies after they hatched) got wet. If I didn’t water the flowers, they died.  Finally, after three years of this and figuring out how I was going to see that both survived I thought I should write a book.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

When the cat, Mittens, escapes from the house and stalks the birds.

Is this your first published book?

No. I actually have ten, I believe, with Guardian Angel Publishing besides several young adult and adult books with other publishers.

We’d love to hear more about you.

I’ve written all my life. At first, I didn’t know where I was headed with it. Then, when I was an adult I met a woman that had eight kids. The first words out of her mouth were, “I’m a writer.”  I decided if she could be one with eight kids to take care of, I should be able to do it with only three.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming BIRDS IN THE FLOWER BASKET events?

I maintain an author/illustrator event calendar on our www.andyandthealbinohorse.blogspot.com site with K.C. Snider. People are welcome to contact me at MJKEL@AOL.COM to be put on an email list that I send out when and where I’m going to be signing.

Thank you for stopping in to share BIRDS IN THE FLOWER BASKET with us. Readers can buy their copy here. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

Thank you. I have enjoyed being an author with Guardian Angel for many years and look forward to many more releases with them.

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES JACK FOSTER, ILLUSTRATOR OF “CHANCES ARE”

Congratulations on the release of Chances Are. Please tell us more about it.

Chances Are is an alphabet, animal, crazy rhyming book. It is filled with giggle producing pictures of soccer playing moles, bike riding peacocks, sports car driving baboons and much, much more.

What medium did you use for illustrating this book? How do you choose?

Jack: I have been an airbrush artist for 25 years. Several years ago I learned how to airbrush digitally. I get great results without all the messy cleanup! I usually sketch with pencil. Then I scan in the sketch and paint it digitally.

What is your favorite illustration from the book? Why?

Jack: I think it is the pink flamingos sipping cider in the shade. Because one of the flamingos is looking at the other. He has a strange look on his face like, “That’s weird. I’ve never seen a flamingo using a straw before!”

Did you have to do any research for this book?

Jack: Yes, I’m a bit embarrassed to say that the author, Susan Bangert-Wood, came up with a few animals that I had to look up. First time I ever drew a lemur.

Is this your first published book?

Jack: No, this is my 19th book for Guardian Angel Publishing. What a blessing to work for such a wonderful company. I’ve also had 4 more books published by various publishers.

We’d love to hear more about you.

While in grammar school, I was blessed to have some great teachers. I’m not talking about their teaching skills, I mean their faces! I would doodle pictures of Mr. Wilkins and his big nose and Mrs. Tanner with her silver wig and globbed-on mascara. At home I would spend night after happy night at the kitchen table copying the Sunday comics while the rest of the family watched “Happy Days.” After high school I attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. I spent several years as a political cartoonist for a suburban newspaper.  I spent several more years airbrushing murals for libraries, churches and kid’s rooms. In 2009 Guardian Angel Publishing took a chance on me. My first book was Poodle and Doodle. I currently live near Chicago with my wife Aleithia, a dog and a cat. I have 5 grown children and 10 grandkids.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming Chances Are events?

Jack: I am on facebook and my blog is  jacktoon.blogspot.com

Thank you for stopping in to share Chances Are with us. Readers can order their copy here. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES MELISSA ROSS, AUTHOR and ILLUSTRATOR OF TODAY I AM A PENGUIN

Congratulations on the release of Today I Am A Penguin. Please tell us more about it.

About the book:

A young girl takes her stuffed penguin on a sled ride that turns into an Antarctic adventure when her imagination transforms them into Adelie penguins.  Packed with educational information and action adventure, children experience what it is like to be a penguin.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Melissa: Children have such amazing imaginations!  I have watched them over the years pretend to be all kinds of things and learn as they pretend.  I wanted to have a book that teaches children and is packed with science curriculum but does so in a fun imaginative way where they can enjoy learning.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

Melissa: Probably when Kaleigh, Ian, and Sammy are “flying in the water.”  I think that would be the most fun about being a penguin.

Is this your first published book?

Melissa: Yes

Congratulations! First book publication is SO exciting.

We’d love to hear more about you.

I’ve loved to write and draw since I was a little girl.  Much of my time growing up was spent drawing and writing as well as reading.  After high school, I earned an associate degree in child development and a bachelor’s in illustration.  Soon after graduation, I married and had four children in eight years.  Busy with my beautiful family, I worked on writing and illustrating when I could, taking writing courses, attending SCBWI conventions, and learning from other writers and illustrators.  I currently teach art part time at a private school where I write and develop the curriculum for my classes.

Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled for Today I Am A Penguin?

Melissa: Not yet but readers can find out about those events on my website under the Books page

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming Today I Am A Penguin events?

Melissa: Look on my web site: www.Melissa-Ross.com

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES NANCY STEWART, AUTHOR OF KATRINA AND WINTER: PARTNERS IN COURAGE

Congratulations on the release of KATRINA AND WINTER: PARTNERS IN COURAGE. Please tell us more about it.

All Katrina Simpkins longs to be is a normal girl. Because she must wear prosthesis as a leg, she feels anything but. When she meets and befriends Winter, the tailless dolphin, at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, everything changes, including Katrina’s whole life.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Nancy: I first saw a video about Katrina’s life at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium about four years ago and was so touched by it.  About a year later, I received a phone call one evening from a woman named Maria Simpkins.  After speaking with her a minute, I realized she was Katrina’s mom!  She’d called to ask if I would be interested in writing a biography of Katrina’s life.  Seems she’d seen my books and had visited my blog.  Without much thought, I immediately said, “Yes.”  Only after I got into the writing process, did I realize how much I wanted this to be perfect for Katrina!

What is your favorite moment from the book?

Nancy: It has to be the first time Katrina gets to meet Winter in the water.  Winter swims right up to Katrina and puts her head on Katrina’s shoulder.  The beginning of a miracle…

Is this your first published book?

Nancy: No, I am also the author of the four Bella and Britt books, all published by Guardian Angel Publishing.

We’d love to hear more about you.

Nancy: I am the bestselling and award winning author of the four Bella and Britt Series books for children:  One Pelican at a Time (eighteen weeks on Amazon Bestselling List), Sea Turtle Summer, (won Children’s Literary Classics Seal of Approval) Bella Saves the Beach and Mystery at Manatee Key. All are published by Guardian Angel Publishing.

One Pelican at a Time and I were featured in the PBS Tampa special, GulfWatch.  Pelican has won the Literary Classics Seal of Approval, Readers Favorite Five Star Award and was nominated for a Global eBook Award.

I am a frequent speaker and presenter at writing conferences throughout the United States.  I conduct workshops and seminars and speak to school children on writing and helping save their planet.  A blogger with a worldwide audience, I love to write of all things pertaining to writing for children.

I am fortunate to have been extensively throughout the world, most particularly Africa and am the US chair of a charity in Lamu, Kenya, that places girls in intermediate schools to allow them to further their education.

My husband and I divide our time between Tampa and St. Louis.

Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled for Katrina and Winter:  Partners in Courage?

Nancy: I am in the middle of an on-going tour with Pump Up Your Book.  In early June, 2012, Katrina and I are appearing in a feature on Channel 10, Tampa with Ginger Gadsden, Morning Anchor.  On June 9, 2012, Katrina and I are appearing at a Book Nook Celebration at the St. Petersburg, FL Pier Aquarium.  I will be conducting an Intensives Workshop on non-fiction at the Summer SWCBI Conference in Orlando, June 15-16, 2012.

Wow, that all sounds very exciting! How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming Katrina and Winter:  Partners in Courage events?

Facebook:  Nancy Rosenthal Stewart

Thank you for stopping in to share Katrina and Winter:  Partners in Courage with us. Readers, be sure to click over the GAP’s web site with the link to Nancy’s book to read an excerpt! We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

ALEX MORRIS, ILLUSTRATOR OF SLIME & ALL and WATER PLAY

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES ALEX MORRIS, ILLUSTRATOR OF SLIME & ALL and WATER PLAY

GAP: Congratulations on the release of SLIME & ALL and WATER PLAY. Please tell us more about them.

Alex: “Slime & All” is the story of a little boy who befriends a giant, friendly, but slimy worm.

“Water Play” talks about how rain, snow, and hail are formed in a fun and playful way for children.

GAP: What medium did you use for illustrating these books? How do you choose?

Alex: When starting a book I always use pencil and paper to start, and when the drawings are finished I scan them into the computer and color them in Flash. I like using this program because it is quick and easy to use, and with the style I draw with I feel using the simple colors of Flash really complements the pictures and gives the characters life.

GAP: What is your favorite illustration from each book? Why?

Alex: In “Slime & All” my favorite drawing is definitely page 4. I like this picture because I love drawing cartoon animal characters and this picture allowed me to draw the worm character, Lump, in full.

For “Water Play” my favorite picture is page 13 mostly because the Dew Drop characters were my favorite to draw and I simply feel that it is the best picture both in color and composition.

GAP: Did you have to do any research for these books?

Alex: I had to do quite a bit of research for “Water Play” because when it comes to drawing buildings, it has never really been my strong point. So I like to look up pictures of various buildings and environments for reference.

GAP: Are these your first published books?

Alex: No, actually my first published book was Lily and the City of Light. It was a big milestone for me, and it helps to remind me of where I have been and where I hope to go in my career one day.

GAP: We’d love to hear more about you.

Alex: Well, as you know my name is Alex Morris. Since middle school when I visited an art college I knew I wanted to pursue a career as an artist. Through the rest of middle school and all of high school I spent a lot of time in the back of the class doodling whatever came to mind, which usually was monsters, mutants, and scary clowns.

Attending college was a real wake up call for me and really pushed me to be the best artist I could be. It also helped me to explore different avenues in my drawings and it was then that one of my first cartoon characters, a sad little amphibian named Danny Frog was created. From there I started drawing more cartoon characters. Many of them a form of my personality or representations of friends I know.

But after college I received my first official illustrating job and drew my first children’s book, “Monty and the Rolling Rock”. Shortly thereafter, with the help of my head illustrator, at the time, Mr. Collier, I started working for Guardian Angel Publishing, and the rest as they say is history.

GAP: Thank you, Alex, for stopping in to share SLIME & ALL and WATER PLAY with us. Readers can purchase Slime & All here and Water Play here. We are proud to add these titles to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing. Be sure to follow us on Facebook so you don’t miss any new releases.
