GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES BILL KIRK, AUTHOR OF “THE INS & OUTS OF AIR” in THE SUM OF OUR PARTS series

Congratulations on the release of THE INS & OUTS OF AIR. Please tell us more about it.

About the book:  The respiratory system is busy 24 hours a day, while we are awake and asleep. In fact, unless we are out of breath, we might not even know our lungs are on the job. The rhymes and learning activities plus the terrific illustrations by Eugene Ruble will help you learn the basics about how the respiratory system works.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Bill:  Good question.  By the way, thanks for extending this interview opportunity.  As part of THE SUM OF OUR PARTS series, this particular book was inspired literally by the huffing and puffing while doing everyday stuff.  The series started out as a single book: “No Bones About It” published in 2009. As it turns out, although hardly planned,  that first book formed the structural foundation for the rest of the series.  So you could say the series has good bones and with Book Seven, it is catching its breath.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

Bill:  I’ll have to think about this question because the books in the series don’t actually tell a story.  Also, if there is a Main Character, it would be the Respiratory System which is the subject of the book.  That said, I do have a couple favorite verses to share with you.  You may notice the strong leading syllable in each line and the staccato, rap feel to the verses.  When writing these kinds of rhyming verses, pretty much the possibilities are endless, which makes it both challenging and loads of fun.

Quickly, molecules of O2,
Crossing membranes one-cell thick,
Find the blood cells they must go to,
And which places they must stick.

In reverse, CO2 oozes
From the blood cells as they pass.
Through gas transfer, blood then loses,
All its Carbon Dioxide gas.

Respiration’s thus repeated,
Each three seconds—day and night.
When your O2’s been depleted,
Breathe and you will be all right.

I love it! Thanks for sharing that. What a fun way to learn about the body, Bill. Is this your first published book?

Bill:  No. “The Ins & Outs Of Air” is Book Seven in the series, which will eventually have ten books covering most of the body’s major structures and systems, basically from head to toes.  Also, four of my fiction stories have been published.

We’d love to hear more about you.

Overall, I’m just a normal person with a slightly wacky view of words and how they fit together, although I suppose there is a remote possibility that I am indeed a wacky person.  I was a nomad for the first 38 years of my life, moving around on five continents as a kid and later with my own family.  But for the last 28 years, I have lived in the same house in Sacramento with my wife, Rita, of 44 years.  We have two children and four grandchildren split between California and South Carolina.  I’m an Air Force veteran, a Scout leader and a church Deacon.  Some of my favorite things to do when I’m not writing is running, backpacking in the High Sierra and sleeping on the ground.

In addition to stories written in rhyme, I also play around with humor and satire. I’m planning a trip to a local fabric store to research my next humor fabrication. Then there’s that perpetual novel waiting in the wings. Everything else has been a little this and a little that.

Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled for THE INS & OUTS OF AIR?

Bill:  I have developed a long-standing relationship with the K-8 school our grandson attended when he was younger and with the Sacramento Public Library. I’m working with the librarians at both places to do readings as part of their on-going literacy programs.  I also donate my books to local schools and branch libraries.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming THE INS & OUTS OF AIR events?

Bill:  I feature all my published books on my website at http://www.billkirkwrites.com where each book has its own book page.  I also have two blogs, one of which specifically features all the books in THE SUM OF OUR PARTS series at http://billkirkwrites-tsoop.blogspot.com

Thank you for stopping in to share THE INS & OUTS OF AIR with us. Readers, you can pick up your copy of THE INS & OUTS OF AIR from the GAP Bookstore. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES MARY JEAN KELSO, AUTHOR OF RV MOUSE

Congratulations on the release of the hardcover version of RV Mouse. Please tell us more about it.

This is a story about a little mouse that gets trapped in a motor home and the chaos it
creates.

This enchanting story, charmingly illustrated, recounts the escapades of one furry little adventurer who is clearly out of his element in a motor home. Young readers and their adult counterparts will enjoy reading this fast-moving tale, told so convincingly from the mouse’s point of view.
—Robbin Gould, Editor, Family Motor Coaching magazine

What was the inspiration for this book?

Some of the incidences actually happened when my family was camping in our new motor home years ago. One night mice found an open vent the manufacturer had not screened. I found the girl that had been sleeping on the couch sitting outside on top of the picnic table. She said a mouse had woken her up when its whiskers brushed her cheek. The idea was too good to ignore so I made it into a book.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

When the woman is swinging the broom and bopping her husband instead of the mouse.

Is this your first published book?

No, I believe Guardian Angel Publishing has about ten of my books out now with more under contract. I also write Young Adult and Adult fiction.

We’d love to hear more about you.

I am a journalist and was an Assistant Editor for several magazines. I wrote for many newspapers and magazines, including Family Motor Coaching, Trailblazer and RV’n On. Although I still write articles for newspapers and magazines, my favorite type of writing is fiction.

Besides RV Mouse, The Christmas Angel, and its sequel, One Family’s Christmas, and the Andy & the Albino Horse series, I also wrote the young adult Lynne Garrett series: Goodbye Is Forever, Abducted!, and Sierra Summer. Also Kat’s Cradle, which is a young adult novel. Blue Coat, and The Homesteader series are my adult Historical Western novels.

I recently received awards from The Nevada Press Assn. and The National Press Assn. as a correspondent for The Lahontan Valley News.

I am a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Alamo Defenders Descendents Association (credit goes to my ancestors for that!). I am also a member of Made in Nevada -- http://madeinnevada.org.

Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled for RV Mouse?

It will be at signings that are already scheduled for summer and fall. I have been in contact with the Family Motor Coaching Assn. about the possibility of signing at their
next convention.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming RV Mouse events?

Thank you for stopping in to share RV Mouse with us. Readers, you can pick up your copy of RV Mouse from the GAP Bookstore. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

Helping Kids Celebrate Memorial Day

As a family filled with Army, Navy, and Marine veterans, Memorial Day is special to us. My brother lost two members of his unit in Afghanistan, and in 2005 one of my high school classmates was killed in Iraq. Here are a few ways you can help your children honor those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of freedom.

  • Visit a veteran's hospital.
  • Visit a veteran's cemetery and place flowers at a veteran's grave site.
  • Make a card for a serviceman or woman serving overseas.
  • Send supplies to a unit serving overseas.
Please feel free to share your ideas for ways to honor our veterans.

Excerpt:

Bella, Britt and all their friends built sand castles and filled moats with salty sea. But this summer, the girls were worried.

“Look at all this trash, Britt,” said Bella.
She nodded. “Yeah, and I leave on vacation tomorrow. I can’t help pick it up!”
Next morning, Bella walked along the beach alone. “Hello.” Bella said to the old crooked beak pelican, perched on his piling. “Somebody has to help, and I guess it’s me.”

A little girl learns about birds through the front window of her home.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Each year birds build nests in my flower baskets that hang on the front porch. It was very frustrating trying to keep both the flowers and the birds alive. If I watered the flowers, the nest (including the eggs or babies after they hatched) got wet. If I didn’t water the flowers, they died.  Finally, after three years of this and figuring out how I was going to see that both survived I thought I should write a book.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

When the cat, Mittens, escapes from the house and stalks the birds.

Is this your first published book?

No. I actually have ten, I believe, with Guardian Angel Publishing besides several young adult and adult books with other publishers.

We’d love to hear more about you.

I’ve written all my life. At first, I didn’t know where I was headed with it. Then, when I was an adult I met a woman that had eight kids. The first words out of her mouth were, “I’m a writer.”  I decided if she could be one with eight kids to take care of, I should be able to do it with only three.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming BIRDS IN THE FLOWER BASKET events?

I maintain an author/illustrator event calendar on our www.andyandthealbinohorse.blogspot.com site with K.C. Snider. People are welcome to contact me at MJKEL@AOL.COM to be put on an email list that I send out when and where I’m going to be signing.

Thank you for stopping in to share BIRDS IN THE FLOWER BASKET with us. Readers can buy their copy here. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.

Thank you. I have enjoyed being an author with Guardian Angel for many years and look forward to many more releases with them.

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES BARBARA CAIRNS, AUTHOR OF GATSBY’S GRAND ADVENTURES

Welcome to the GAP Family Blog, Barbara. Please tell us more Gatsby’s Grand Adventures.

About the book:

Gatsby is an art gallery cat who jumps into famous paintings at night. When he remembers to jump back out before sunrise, everything is fine. But sometimes, Gatsby forgets and that’s when strange things happen to Winslow Homer’s painting, “Snap the Whip”. Each book in the Gatsby’s Grand Adventures series will feature a different artist’s work and will provide a biography of the artist plus several websites about each artist.

What was the inspiration for this book?

I’m an animal lover and an art lover so wanted to combine the two in a fun book that would help children learn more about different artists and their paintings.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

I love it when Gatsby and the little mouse romp through the one-room schoolhouse. It not only brings back fond memories of attending a one-room schoolhouse, but also helps children learn a bit about a simpler way of life.

We’d love to hear more about you, Barbara.

My first book was published for teachers in 1979. The publisher in Pennsylvania not only published the teacher’s manual, but also student workbooks and playing cards to go with it, based on the 30 games I’d provided for learning opposites. My most recent publication (before Gatsby) was Cracker Cow, a Narrative of Florida History, which features Magnolia, a cracker cow whose ancestors came to Florida with Ponce De Leon and started the whole cattle industry in that state.

The Gatsby books are a dream come true after several years of having different versions dancing around inside my head.

I’m a Connecticut Yankee who always wanted to travel. Since college, I’ve lived and worked in Seattle, Washington; Labrador, Canada; Bamberg, Germany; and Canal Zone, Panama. I’ve always enjoyed writing and have had a diverse writing career… Wrote guidelines for starting the first special education n classes in the Atlantic Region for Department of Defense Dependent Schools,(DODDS) wrote stories for Ginn & Company 4th Grade Readers, wrote a monthly column for Pacific Skipper yachting magazine, which involved interviewing “yachties” who transited the Panama Canal, wrote newspaper and online columns (weekly and monthly respectively), wrote a 30-page proposal to open the first school library in the Canal Zone, edited the Federal Women’s Program newsletter, wrote articles and stories for a variety of magazines, wrote guidelines for a worldwide DODDS Host Nation Program, and wrote a winning essay in the Marjorie Kinnan  Rawlings Writing Contest, comparing my experiences with a pet fawn to those in The Yearling.

No one ever told me I should stick to one genre or niche! Right now, in addition to more Gatsby books, I’m working on a middle grade novel set in Florida during the Civil War.

How can our readers learn more about you and any upcoming “Gatsby’s Grand Adventures” events?

In addition to the Guardian Angel Publishing site, I have two websites of my own; www.crackercow.com and a new one I’m developing, www.barabaracairnsbooks.com.

Thank you for stopping in to share “Gatsby’s Grand Adventure” with us. Readers can purchase their copy here. We are proud to add it to the ever-growing line of quality titles from Guardian Angel Publishing.
